Modernity & Heritage at Houghton Hall

Modernity & Heritage at Houghton Hall

With a passion for contemporary creation and modern thinking, we were proud to support this ground-breaking exhibition at Houghton Hall

British artist Damien Hirst, is a leading figure of the international art scene and was Awarded the Turner Prize in 1995. His work challenges the concepts of high and low art, pop and classicism, authenticity and mass production and never ceases to surprise and provoke. The juxtaposition of his contemporary work and the classic beauty of Houghton Hall creates an intriguing tension between past and present, abstraction and figuration.

A new series of paintings, Colour Space, was installed in the State Rooms at Houghton Hall from 25 March – 15 July 2018 for the exhibition Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall. The Colour Space series marked a development of the artist's iconic Spot Paintings, which are among the his most recognised works. The show also included a selection of the artist’s most celebrated sculptures, installed throughout the 18th-century house and gardens.

Houghton Hall is one of the most important British stately homes, immaculately preserved by the Cholmondley family for generations. The family has a history of supporting the artists of their times and today they are behind one of the leading contemporary art programmes in the UK. Their bold vision of making exciting contemporary art accessible to a wide audience resonates with Mulberry’s celebration of heritage and our passion for a democratic approach to art and design culture.
