Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship has always been at the heart of Mulberry – in every stitch; every cut of leather; every considered detail. Our artisans craft bags that are Made to Last: to be loved, used daily, repaired, and passed on for generations to come.

Although we're now a global brand, the rolling hills of the West Country is still where we call home. It's where, for over 50 years, we've been turning ideas into iconic bags. Today, at The Rookery and The Willows, our two carbon-neutral factories in Somerset, we continue to make around 50% of our Icons, making us the largest manufacturer of luxury leather goods in the UK.

Our bags are defined by classic silhouettes, supple leathers, and signature details like the Mulberry Tree and Postman's Lock, and each one can be the work of up to 30 skilled craftspeople. From our leather specialists, who source the perfect hide, and our cutting technicians, who mark and cut each leather panel, to our stitching technicians and panel assemblers – each step is performed with a care and expertise born from years of experience. When production is in full swing, our artisan teams at The Rookery and The Willows can create over a thousand bags a week.

Leather has always been fundamental to Mulberry, and today makes up around 90% of our collection. We source our leather responsibly, with most coming from within the EU, meeting the highest environmental standards. But for us, leather is more than just a material – it's about craft, longevity, and sustainability. That's why our goal is to build direct relationships with farmers practicing regenerative agriculture, ensuring that leather production works in harmony with nature. Since 2022, we've worked exclusively with environmentally accredited tanneries, and are proud founding partners of the Sustainable Leather Foundation.

We are always exploring alternative materials, whether that’s Econyl®, Scotchgrain, or canvas. What ties our materials together, however, is looking closer at the source – rethinking how leather is produced to support craft, community, and the planet in equal measure.
